Does a second strap help when a recovery point fails?

During a 4x4 vehicle recovery, a second recovery rope or strap is sometimes wrapped loosely around the primary recovery rope. The aim is for the second loose strap to help bring the recovery rope to ground and prevent damage or injury in the event of a failure.

As can be seen from the video simulation, the second strap/rope does not bring the recovery rope to ground and the shackle hits the test bonnet with force.
